Seismic specimen from Universal Thirst

An experimental variable typeface designed for the 2020 Dhaka Art Summit, with deliberately irregular letterforms across Bangla and Latin scripts that mimic the trembling motion of an earthquake.

About

Created in response to the Dhaka Art Summit's 'seismic movements' theme, the typeface extends across three stylistic variants — standard, Aftershock and Shock — each escalating the degree of distortion applied to the letterforms. Universal Thirst handled the Bangla script while Fraser Muggeridge studio designed the Latin counterpart, with the family spanning six weights plus a variable edition covering both scripts. The project sits within Universal Thirst's broader effort to expand the range of expressive, contemporary typefaces available for Indic scripts.

Classification

Classified as display due to its deliberately irregular, shaky letterforms designed to evoke seismic movement rather than readability at text sizes. The variable axis controls the degree of distortion across Bangla and Latin scripts.
