An award-winning Tamil display typeface that reimagines 1960s–70s psychedelic lettering through variable weight distribution across top-heavy, bottom-heavy and monolinear styles.
About
Designed by Anagha Narayanan, Ilai draws on counter-culture visuals – film posters and record covers – to bring compressed, experimental letterforms into the Tamil script. The family's defining characteristic is its variable stroke emphasis: weight can be concentrated at the top or bottom of each letterform, or distributed evenly as a monoline, producing forms that shift from elegant simplicity to fluid, ink-puddle heaviness. It received a TDC69 Best of Type Design award from the Type Directors Club in 2023.
Classification
A Tamil display typeface drawing on 1960s–70s psychedelic lettering traditions, with variable weight distribution creating top-heavy, bottom-heavy or monolinear stroke effects. The experimental, compressed forms and fluid letterforms place it firmly in the display category.
