The source material — a ceramic street sign from the Portuguese town of Grândola — provides an idiosyncratic starting point: staircase crossbars on the E, an S whose spine sits close to the baseline, and an oversized R loop give the design a playful edge within an otherwise geometric structure. Because so few letters existed on the original plaques, the designer extrapolated the full character set, with lowercase forms mirroring the capitals. Post-binary ligatures, inspired by those of l'Adelphe, extend the typeface's political dimension, connecting it to the spirit of the Carnation Revolution and the song 'Grândola, Vila Morena'.
