A four-weight extra-compressed display grotesque rooted in late 19th-century Russian hand composition typefaces, awarded the Galina Prize at Kyrillitsa'99.
About
Designed by Albert Kapitonov in 1999 and released by ParaType in 2000, the typeface draws directly from pre-revolutionary Russian sources: Uzky Tonky Grotesk, Poluzhirny Knizhny Grotesk and the Reforma faces from the H. Berthold and O. Lehmann foundries in St. Petersburg. The extreme compression and distinctive letterforms are characteristic of display printing from the turn of the 20th century. It won the Galina Prize at the Kyrillitsa'99 international type design competition in Moscow for its creative exploration of the Russian typographic tradition.
Classification
An extra-compressed sans serif revival of late 19th-century Russian hand composition grotesques, with distinctive display letterforms placing it firmly in the display category rather than a functional grotesque.
