A stencil display face loosely based on house number plate lettering from St Petersburg, offering eight stylistic sets that vary the direction and depth of each letterform's cuts across Latin and Cyrillic.
About
Originally drawn for art director Meirion Pritchard for a special issue of Wallpaper*, Oboi takes its cue from Russian civic signage and reinterprets it with a wealth of alternate forms controlled through OpenType stylistic sets. The eight sets allow designers to toggle between straight, round, centered, horizontal, asymmetrical and angled cuts, producing markedly different textures from the same base characters. Both Latin uppercase and a full Cyrillic uppercase are included, alongside lowercase alternates for each script.
Classification
An all-caps stencil typeface derived from house number plate lettering, with eight stylistic sets offering varied cut orientations – straight, centered, horizontal, asymmetrical, angled and reduced – placing it firmly in the display/stencil category.
