A two-style revival of 19th-century German grotesque type, drawn from Ossip Lehmann's 1874 Gasetny Chorny and Haas's Kompakte Grotesk, issued by ParaType in 1997.
About
Tagir Safayev based this face on two historical sources: the Gasetny Chorny ('Newspaper Black') from the Ossip Lehmann foundry in St Petersburg, dated 1874, and the Kompakte Grotesk from Haas. The family offers only Black and Black Oblique, reflecting its single-minded purpose as a display face for advertising and poster work. Its heavy weight and old-fashioned character suit retro and historical editorial contexts.
Classification
A heavy, old-fashioned German sans-serif revival in the grotesque tradition, designed for advertising and display use. With only Black and Black Oblique weights, its purpose and form place it firmly in the display category.
