Notary is built on Ludlow's Record Gothic and the wider American Gothic family of typefaces. Rather than smoothing out what he saw as irregularities in the source, Montalbano kept them and built a calibrated weight range the original never had. Eight weights from Extra Thin to Heavy include obliques corrected by hand for the optical distortion digital slanting usually causes.

The designer's own description is the closest thing to a revival I will ever do, based on Ludlow's Record Gothic and the American Gothic trinity of typefaces. Kept close to the original's irregularities rather than corrected, with obliques hand-adjusted rather than mechanically slanted. Recategorised here as sans-serif rather than the original brief's Script label, since this is a gothic sans revival with no script elements.
