sans-serifgrotesqueitalic
ITC Franklin Gothic specimen from ParaType

ParaType's distribution of the ITC Franklin Gothic family, offering eight styles across four weights with matching italics, based on Benton's enduring American grotesque.

About

ITC Franklin Gothic is a 1980s redrawing of Morris Fuller Benton's Franklin Gothic, originally released in 1902, expanded by ITC into a more complete weight range. The ParaType offering covers four weights – Book, Medium, Demi and Heavy – each with a matching italic, totalling eight styles. The family retains the squared terminals, moderate stroke contrast and forthright character that made the original a staple of American commercial typography.

Classification

A grotesque sans-serif rooted in Morris Fuller Benton's Franklin Gothic (1902), redrawn by ITC in the 1980s with expanded weights and optical refinements. Retains the characteristic medium stroke contrast, squared terminals and sturdy proportions of the original American grotesque tradition.
