A Scotch Modern revival drawn by eye from 10-point type in an 1870 scientific publication, without scans or tracing, across five styles including a dedicated Display cut.
About
Nick Shinn reconstructed this Scotch Modern by studying 10-point type from an 1870 scientific report, producing vector drawings entirely freehand rather than tracing digitised scans. The approach is framed as a deliberate critique of the mechanical reproduction of historical letterforms. Five styles are offered: Regular, Italic, Bold, Bold Italic and Display.
Classification
A Scotch Modern, rooted in the high-contrast, rationalist serif tradition of early 19th-century Scottish punchcutters. The Display style and fine micro-detail suggest optical size differentiation typical of the genre.
