A single-weight condensed display serif designed at SoftUnion in 1994, based on Gerry Powell's Onyx (Monotype, 1937), with extreme stroke contrast and ball terminals suited to magazine headlines.
About
Radar follows the Onyx template closely: extremely narrow proportions, hairline strokes set against very heavy verticals, and ball terminals on curved letters. With only one style available, it is a specialist headline face rather than a workhorse text family. The design was produced by Nikolay Vsesvetsky at SoftUnion and is sold through ParaType.
Classification
The specimen shows an extremely high-contrast condensed serif with ball terminals and pronounced thick-thin stroke variation, consistent with its origin as a revival of Onyx – a Bodoni-derived display face by Gerry Powell (Monotype, 1937). The extreme contrast and narrow proportions place it firmly in the display category.
