A single-weight fat face from Soft Union, designed in 1993–1994 as a variant on the nineteenth-century genre represented by Monotype Onyx.
About
Designed by Nikolay Vsesvetsky at Soft Union between 1993 and 1994, Arsis follows the tradition of extreme-contrast fat face types that became fashionable in the nineteenth century. It is comparable to Monotype Onyx, itself derived from an American Type Founders cut of 1937 and a Monotype version of 1955. The family comprises a single Regular weight, suited to headline and magazine display use.
Classification
A fat face display serif in the nineteenth-century tradition, closely related to Monotype Onyx. Extreme stroke contrast with very thin hairlines against heavy verticals is characteristic of the fat face genre.
