displayreverse-contrast display
Koyla Devanagari specimen from Indian Type Foundry

A single-weight Devanagari display face by Ninad Kale built on a reverse-contrast logic, with thin verticals, thick horizontals and elongated dots that open up the counterforms.

About

Released in 2015, this face inverts the conventional stroke contrast of Devanagari letterforms, drawing thin verticals and diagonals while select horizontal connections carry the weight. Knots and loops are kept open to expose counterforms, and the matras and ukars are generously sized for a display typeface. Terminals end in vertical shears despite an underlying brushy quality throughout the characters.

Classification

A single-weight Devanagari display face combining high-contrast and reverse-contrast construction, where vertical strokes are thin and select horizontal elements carry the weight – an inversion of conventional stroke logic. The brushy, experimental quality and display classification place it firmly in the display category.
