Maison Margiela 6
Helsinki Type Studio · Niklas Ekholm

A custom brutalist geometric typeface designed for MM6 Maison Margiela, expanding Helsinki Type Studio's Absolution into a three-weight variable family built around raw structural geometry and purposeful restraint.
About
Designed by Niklas Ekholm with art direction from Tony Eräpuro, the typeface draws on the industrial, deconstructed aesthetic of early Martin Margiela catalogues to produce forms that strip type to its geometric essentials. Three calibrated weights — Light, Regular and Bold — were developed via a new variable axis, each carrying a distinct voice: the Light reads like hesitant notation, the Regular serves as a neutral base, and the Bold adds weight without excess. The commission gave Ekholm the opportunity to complete a long-running expansion of Absolution that had never previously been published.
Classification
A brutalist geometric display typeface with monolithic, stripped-back forms that reject traditional typographic conventions in favour of raw structural geometry. Its bold, architectural shapes and purposeful restraint place it firmly in the geometric display category.
