Frank Rühl Variable specimen from Fontef

A variable revival of Raphael Frank's 1924 Hebrew typeface for Berthold, spanning four optical sizes and three weights across 12 styles.

About

Frank Rühl has been the dominant Hebrew text face of the twentieth century, and this variable release from Fontef is the first to formalise its optical size range into discrete grades: Micro, Text, Headline and Display. Three weights – Regular, Medium and Bold – run across all four sizes, yielding 12 styles. Frank himself described the design philosophy in 1911 as a move toward quiet, continuous letterforms that improve reading fluency by reducing the sharp contrast between thick and thin strokes.

Classification

A Hebrew serif rooted in Raphael Frank's 1924 Berthold typeface, designed with even stroke contrast and quiet, readable letterforms to blend the clarity of Antiqua with the approachability of Fraktur. The variable format introduces optical size axes across four grades: Micro, Text, Headline and Display.
