Six display typefaces reconstructed from the mastheads of banned newspapers, created for Reporters Without Borders as tools of press-freedom advocacy.
About
Commissioned by Reporters Without Borders and conceived by Serviceplan Campaign, each typeface was digitised from the masthead of a suppressed publication – spanning Azerbaijan, Russia, Hungary, Turkey, Vietnam and a second Hungarian title. The six fonts cover Latin, Cyrillic and Vietnamese scripts and are freely available under the Open Font Licence. The project was awarded the Gutenberg Prize of the City of Leipzig and a Red Dot Award in 2019.
Classification
A collection of six individually distinct display typefaces, each reconstructed from the masthead of a banned newspaper. Styles range from a constructed narrow sans (Azadliq) to a 3D oblique layered face (Novye Kolyosa), a high-contrast Didone (Magyar Nemzet), a wide serif (Özgür Gündem), a bold display script with diacritics (Tuoi Tre) and a condensed bold serif (Népszabadság).
