Fonts For Freedom specimen from bBox Type

Six display typefaces reconstructed from the mastheads of banned or suppressed newspapers worldwide, created for Reporters Without Borders as tools of press freedom advocacy.

About

Produced in collaboration with Serviceplan Campaign for Reporters Without Borders, the project digitised and reconstructed lettering from six suppressed publications across Azerbaijan, Russia, Hungary, Turkey and Vietnam. Each typeface carries the visual identity of its source publication – from the narrow constructed caps of AZADLIQ to the sharp Didone forms of Magyar Nemzet – with character sets covering Latin, Cyrillic and Vietnamese. All six fonts are freely available under the OFL licence, and the project was awarded the Gutenberg Prize of the City of Leipzig and a Red Dot Award in 2019.

Classification

A collection of six display typefaces, each reconstructed from the masthead lettering of a banned newspaper. Styles range from constructed narrow display and 3D-layered oblique to Didone, wide serif and fat slab forms.
