Cinema

Alex Lescieux · Alex Lescieux · 2023

sans-serifgeometric grotesque
Cinema specimen from Alex Lescieux

A bold geometric sans after Neuzeit Grotesk, as used on Hans Hillmann's film posters.

About

Cinema goes back to Wilhelm Pischner's 1928 Neuzeit Grotesk, by way of the posters and catalogues Hans Hillmann made for Neue Filmkunst Walter Kirchner. It keeps what later versions lost: narrow straights against wide rounds, a J whose bar lines up with its tail, a sharp M. Short extenders make it work as a plain, sturdy lineal.

Classification

A geometric sans with grotesk roughness in its openings, short ascenders and very short descenders, and a strong contrast in proportion between straight and round letters, after Stempel's Neuzeit Grotesk.
