scriptchancery italic
Alizé specimen from TypeTogether

A three-weight chancery script by Tom Grace, drawing on 16th-century italic traditions with high contrast, shifted axes and subtle irregularities that suggest a handmade quality.

About

Alizé takes its cues from sweeping Renaissance chancery italics, translating their calligraphic energy into a digital type family across three weights. The design introduces syncopation in its axes and proportions alongside deliberate imperfections that preserve a handwritten feel. OpenType features include small capitals, discretionary ligatures, alternate figures and case-sensitive forms.

Classification

Inspired directly by 16th-century chancery italics, Alizé sits within the script category as a formal chancery style. Its high contrast, syncopated axes and deliberate handmade irregularities place it firmly in this tradition rather than as a conventional roman serif.
