A display chancery script by Alexandre Bassi, drawing from 16th and 17th century copper-engraved writing manuals – named after Leopardo Antonozzi's manual – across four weights with an extensive palette of swashes, ligatures and alternate forms.
About
Bassi's fascination with the exuberant freedom of historical chancellery models, originally drawn with thin nibs and engraved on copper, is the engine behind Leopardo's design. Pronounced stroke contrast, sharp terminals, recurring drops and a quick ductus give it vivid typographic colour across the four styles: Laser, Thin, Light and Regular. The glyph set is generous, offering initial and final letter forms, discretionary ligatures, ultra-swash capitals and numerous contextual alternates that bring the calligraphic gesture into a structured typographic system. The family received a Certificate of Excellence from the Type Directors Club (TDC70) in 2024.
Classification
An italic display script rooted in 16th and 17th century chancery calligraphy, specifically the copper-engraved writing manuals that preceded Round hand. Its pronounced contrast, quick ductus and sharp terminals place it firmly in the calligraphic script tradition, interpreted here as a typographic display system.
