Kermes
Tarek Atrissi Design · Tarek Atrissi · 2020

A bilingual Arabic-Latin humanist sans-serif released in 2020, available as a variable font spanning nine weights from Hairline to Black.
About
Kermes draws its name from a Spanish word of Arabic origin, a nod to the cross-cultural design approach that unifies its Latin and Arabic components in weight, colour and rhythm. The Latin component is a humanist sans-serif with a calligraphic undercurrent, while the Arabic includes distinct character constructions that give the family a recognisable personality without sacrificing legibility. The variable font format allows continuous weight selection across the full nine-weight spectrum.
Classification
A humanist sans-serif with a strong calligraphic spirit in both its Latin and Arabic components, the design draws from calligraphic traditions to create a cross-cultural bilingual family with matching weight, colour and rhythm across both scripts.
