Varietta grew from photographing reversed-contrast lettering on Spanish market marquees, then expanding Butti's never-digitised Hastile design to 27 styles from thin condensed to black expanded. Variable-font technology adds a horizontal-contrast axis connecting the Spanish and Italian sources in one typeface.
