A text serif designed by Jeanne Saliou with dedicated OpenType support for Breton consonant mutations, Welsh digraphs and Galo ligatures, alongside features for inclusive writing in French and Breton.
About
Born from a research project on the role of typography in preserving Brittonic languages, Bilzig offers four weights with matching italics, small capitals and uncial alternates drawn from Celtic manuscript letterforms. Specialised OpenType features cover Breton consonant mutations (c'h, zh, gw), Welsh digraphs (ch, dd, ff, ll, ng, ph, rh, th) and Galo ligatures as distinct layout features, each toggled independently. The design also addresses contemporary inclusive writing conventions for French and Breton.
Classification
Bilzig displays characteristics of a humanist serif with uncial alternate letterforms (D, E, G, T) and a warm, text-oriented construction suited to long-form reading. The uncial alternates and Breton consonant mutation ligatures point to a design rooted in Celtic manuscript traditions.
