Designed by Eugene Yukechev, Struve applies a unit-grid system derived from Frank Blokland's lettermodel research to systematise letter widths, side bearings and kerning, producing an unusually consistent typographic rhythm across five weights with slanted companions. The large x-height and closed aperture make it viable at small text sizes as well as for tightly set display work. Extensive Latin and Cyrillic coverage, including extended characters and multiple stylistic sets drawn from early 20th-century typographic ephemera, gives it range across a wide variety of languages and voices.
Classification
A neogrotesque with closed apertures, large x-height and a vertical stem-grid system, deliberately resisting the homogenising influence of Helvetica in favour of preserving rougher old-grotesk character. Its wide proportions and disciplined unit-grid construction place it firmly in the neogrotesque tradition.
