A condensed display grotesque reviving the early 20th-century Karola Grotesk and Boutique types, extended with a Black weight drawn from Berthold's Hercules.
About
Designed at ParaType in 1994 by Tatiana Lyskova, Karolla draws on Karola Grotesk from the H. Berthold and Bauer foundries and the Haas foundry's Boutique. A Bold style based on Berthold's Hercules was added by Manvel Shmavonyan in 2002, giving the family two weights in a narrow cut intended for advertising and display typography. Its Art Nouveau character makes it well suited to poster, packaging and fashion contexts.
Classification
A condensed display grotesque rooted in early 20th-century Art Nouveau foundry types, with heavy weights suited to poster and advertising use rather than continuous text setting.
