Denz

ParaType · Zakhar Yaschin

sans-serifgrotesqueitalic
Denz specimen from ParaType

A deliberately imperfect old grotesque by Zakhar Yaschin, drawing on the quirks of the Rublenaya typeface to produce a warm, characterful text face across five weights with true italics and variable font support.

About

Denz inherits the irregularities and closed letterforms typical of late 19th-century grotesques, including a tailed lowercase a and a general sense of human warmth that sets it apart from neutral modern sans-serifs. Five upright weights run from Light to Black, each with a true italic, and the family also ships as upright and italic variable fonts. Coverage extends to over 360 languages including extended Cyrillic, making it suitable for expressive display use in both Latin and Cyrillic contexts.

Classification

An old grotesque with closed or semi-closed forms, a tail on the lowercase a and deliberate irregularity in letterforms, placing it firmly in the earliest tradition of sans serif type design.
