A Bitstream-derived digitisation of the ATF Caslon 540 (1902), extended with a Cyrillic version developed for ParaType in 2002 by Isay Slutsker and Manvel Shmavonyan.
About
Tracing its lineage to William Caslon I's 1725 Old Style types – themselves informed by late 17th-century Dutch printing – this version is based on the American Type Founders' 1902 Caslon 540. Strokes are somewhat heavier than earlier Old Style models, with thicker, slightly stubby serifs and an uneven italic slope characteristic of the tradition. The addition of Cyrillic broadens the family's reach for Russian-language publishing.
Classification
Rooted in William Caslon I's 1725 Old Style designs, themselves modelled on late 17th-century Dutch types. Characterised by moderate stroke contrast, somewhat heavy strokes, thick stubby serifs and an uneven italic slope – hallmarks of the English Old Style tradition as revived through the ATF Caslon 540 of 1902.
