A Cyrillic-extended adaptation of the ATF Caslon Bold (1905), itself tracing back to William Caslon I's 1725 Old Style letterforms, issued by ParaType in 2002.
About
The design follows Bitstream's interpretation of the American Type Founders' 1905 Caslon Bold, preserving its characteristic heavier strokes, thickened serifs and the uneven slope of the italic. Caslon's originals were modelled on Dutch types of the late 17th century, refined with a variety of form and subtlety of detail that made the face a staple of English book printing. The Cyrillic extension was developed for ParaType by Isay Slutsker and Manvel Shmavonyan, broadening the family's reach into Russian-language publishing.
Classification
Rooted in William Caslon I's 1725 Old Style designs, themselves modelled on late 17th-century Dutch types. Slightly heavier strokes and thicker, stubby serifs distinguish it from earlier Old Style faces; the italic carries an uneven slope typical of the period.
