Louize

205TF · Matthieu Cortat · 2011

serifold-style serifitalic
Louize specimen from 205TF

A 2011 revival of Louis Perrin's 19th-century Augustaux by Matthieu Cortat, available in three weights with small capitals, ornamental italic capitals and a sharper Display variant drawn from stone-engraved lettering.

About

Cortat traces Louize back to the 1846 Augustaux commissioned by Lyonnais printer Louis Perrin, one of the earliest revivals in type history, which itself drew on monumental Roman inscriptions found in Lyon. The text styles retain the Augustaux's quiet grey and soft curves, while the Display variant sharpens the letterforms toward their lapidary origins, adding ligatures derived from concise epigraphic carving. Small capitals accompany the roman styles; ornamental capitals appear in the italics.

Classification

A contemporary reinterpretation of Louis Perrin's 19th-century Augustaux, itself a revival of monumental Roman inscriptional lettering. Belongs firmly in the old-style serif tradition, with soft curves, calm stroke contrast and small capitals characteristic of that genre, plus a Display subfamily with sharper, lapidary qualities.
