A digital revival of ATF's 1917 Garamond, drawn by Morris Fuller Benton from Jannon's types, now expanded to 18 styles across three optical sizes and three weights including a new medium.
About
First released around 1918 and based on Jean Jannon's types held at the French Imprimerie Nationale, ATF Garamond set the template for many subsequent Garamond revivals, including Linotype's Garamond No. 3. This new digital version adds three optical sizes – Micro, Subhead and Text – each in Regular, Medium and Bold with matching italics, restoring the weight and presence of metal type often softened in earlier digitisations. Swash characters and alternates from Thomas M. Cleland's 1922 companion italic are also included.
Classification
Rooted in Jean Jannon's 17th-century types, themselves inspired by Claude Garamond's 16th-century punchcutting. The ATF interpretation, first drawn by Morris Fuller Benton in 1917-1918, exhibits characteristic oldstyle features: moderate stroke contrast, bracketed serifs, angled stress and a lively italic.
