A revival of Robert Girard's 1921 Astrée, the French Garamond later sold as Mazarin, now with a narrow, sharp Big cut for news headlines.
About
Jan Maack worked from rare archival specimens to revive Astrée/Mazarin, refining proportions, raising the x-height and moderating ascenders while keeping the cool sharpness of the original italics. IvyMazarin Big recasts the design in news proportions: narrower, sharper and more tightly spaced, with an even larger x-height for headlines. Both sizes come in five weights with matching italics, plus Roman and Italic variable fonts, and keep the historical quirks as OpenType features: a long-legged R, alternate Q, swashes, discretionary ligatures and small caps.
Classification
A revival of a 1920s French interpretation of Garamond, placing it firmly in the old-style serif tradition with humanist roots and classical proportions refined for contemporary use.
