Bogdan specimen from ParaType

A calligraphic script typeface rooted in Ukrainian Skoropis handwriting of the 16th–17th centuries, named after Cossack leader Bogdan Khmelnitsky.

About

Designed by Viktor Kharyk and licensed by ParaType in 2006, the typeface draws directly from handwritten Universals (decrees) of mid-17th century Ukraine, with letterforms imitating flat nib quill strokes complete with stress and informal liveliness. Two stylistic variants – Rejestrowy (Regular) and Siczowy (Alternate) – each include a cursive companion, offering four styles in total. The character set is unusually broad, covering Cyrillic, Old Slavonic, Glagolitic, Latin and Greek, making it a strong choice for historical and cultural texts associated with 15th–17th century Europe.

Classification

Based on Ukrainian Skoropis (fast handwriting) of the 16th–17th centuries, the typeface imitates flat nib quill strokes with stress, placing it firmly in the historical calligraphic script category.
