Alberto Malossi's reworking of Karlgeorg Hoefer's Permanent (1962), filtered through the memory of its hot-metal life in Italian publishing and refined into five weights with italics and a variable companion.
About
Begun as an MA project at ECAL in 2019, LL Schema takes Hoefer's Permanent as its starting point rather than its blueprint, with Malossi improvising freely from recollection rather than tracing original sources. The result is a coherent family across five weights where Permanent's characteristic contrast handling is subtly sharpened and the overall balance improved upon the original. Its public debut followed use at Harper's Bazaar Italia, where M/M (Paris) employed it as the cornerstone of the magazine's new visual identity.
Classification
A neo-grotesque revival of Karlgeorg Hoefer's Permanent (1962), itself positioned as a competitor to Folio, Univers and Helvetica. The design retains the rigid quirkiness of Hoefer's original while discreetly enhancing its contrast treatment and letterforms.
