Plinc Albro specimen from House Industries

A 1950 display face by Alexey Brodovitch, digitised by Paul Barnes, whose letterforms take their rhythmic character from musical notation.

About

Designed by legendary fashion magazine art director Alexey Brodovitch, Albro takes its name from a portmanteau of his own. The face draws its unusual rhythm from musical notation, producing forms that sit outside conventional typographic categories while remaining warm and legible. Paul Barnes digitised it in 2007 for a Kate Moss collection produced by Topshop, bringing this rare mid-century curiosity back into circulation.

Classification

An idiosyncratic display face whose letterforms draw rhythmic inspiration from musical notation, placing it firmly in the decorative display category. Its unconventional forms resist easy subcategorisation but share qualities with calligraphic and script-influenced display types.
