Petit Serif

205TF · Matthieu Cortat · 2012

serifinscriptional serif
Petit Serif specimen from 205TF

A capitals-only titling face by Matthieu Cortat, derived from Percy J. Delf Smith's architectural lettering for 55 Broadway, London, with serifs grown from brush rather than pen.

About

Originally released in 2012 as a single weight, a 2026 update expanded the family to three weights – Light, Regular and Bold – plus a variable font. The design carries classical Roman proportions with serifs that echo the brushwork of the source lettering rather than the conventional quill-cut model. Coverage extends to Greek and Cyrillic, with alternate forms for Basque via OpenType stylistic sets.

Classification

A lineal typeface of monumental Roman capitals with classical proportions, derived from Percy J. Delf Smith's architectural lettering. The serifs are subtle, arising from the brushwork of the original hand-lettered inscriptions rather than typographic tradition, placing it close to the inscriptional or lapidary serif tradition.
