Cappella
Terminal Design · James Montalbano

A ten-weight serif built from the idiosyncratic character of wood-carved chapel lettering, with a lowercase drawn to match rather than a straight mechanical expansion.
About
Cappella began as a single-weight, all-caps custom design for Fordham Chapel, based on wood-carved letters Montalbano found idiosyncratic enough to want to develop further. The lowercase blends details lifted from the uppercase with calligraphic moves from his earlier work. Montalbano is upfront that it will not suit every job, but calls the result fresh and interesting.
Classification
Grew out of a one-weight, all-caps custom job for Fordham Chapel based on wood-carved letters. The lowercase folds in calligraphic details from Montalbano's earlier work rather than following the caps mechanically.
