An all-capitals display typeface by Matthieu Cortat, commissioned for a John Armleder installation at the Palais de la Porte Dorée, evoking the engraved letterforms of French colonial-era institutional architecture.
About
Originally designed for architects group8 and artist John Armleder, Chrysaora revisits the engraving tradition of the Cité nationale de l'histoire de l'immigration, formerly the Museum of the Colonies. Available in three weights, it includes numerous ligatures, extensive Vietnamese support and covers more than 105 languages despite being restricted to capitals. The name references Chrysaor, son of Poseidon and Medusa, connecting the typeface to the mythological iconography of the Palais de la Porte Dorée's Athena statue.
Classification
An all-capitals display typeface drawing from the tradition of architectural engraving, designed to replicate the chiselled letterforms found on Parisian institutional facades. Its origins in a site-specific commission for an art installation place it firmly in the display category.
