A single-weight roman with engraved origins, designed for the city of Beaune in 1995 and overhauled by Damien Gautier in 2011 with a simplified structure and an unusually rich set of discretionary ligatures.
About
Originally created for signage in Beaune, Bourgogne, the typeface was never deployed as intended before Gautier returned to it for a thorough revision sixteen years later. The 2011 version strips back ornamentation in favour of direct, stated forms while preserving the character of engraved lettering through contextual alternates and an extensive ligature set covering over forty pairs. It supports a broad range of Latin-script languages alongside OpenType features including ordinals, superscripts and stylistic alternates.
Classification
Originally conceived for municipal signage in Beaune, Le Beaune retains engraved letterform origins with simplified, stated forms and an extensive set of discretionary ligatures that betray its inscriptional roots. Classified as display due to its single-weight roman-only offering and strong contextual character.
