Grevillea
Vee Ratchanon · Ratchanon Boongsrithong · 2024

A 2024 Thai-Latin typeface by Ratchanon Boongsrithong that translates humanist broad-nib calligraphy into a bi-scriptual design, using a brushy terminal that functions as a loop terminal in Thai script.
About
Grevillea challenges the mono-linear convention of most Thai typefaces by introducing stroke contrast derived from the broad nib tradition. The brushy terminal detail serves a dual purpose: in Thai it becomes a loop terminal that aids legibility, while in Latin it informs the terminal details, giving both scripts a shared calligraphic foundation. The result is a friendly, organic character that allows Thai and Latin to coexist on equal footing rather than one script simply accommodating the other.
Classification
Inspired by humanist broad nib calligraphy, Grevillea uses a distinctive brushy stroke-ending terminal that doubles as a loop terminal in Thai script, placing it within the humanist serif tradition adapted for bi-scriptual use.
