Fred Smeijers's 1992 revival of Hendrik van den Keere's Flemish Gros Canon of c.1570, a condensed, dark-coloured display roman from the Garamond tradition with a freshly designed italic.
About
Rather than following the convention of bold variants, Renard offers three lighter weights intended to complement one another: No.1 as the principal face, No.2 for headings and No.3 as a true light. All three weights include small capitals, old style figures, related italics and ligatures. Smeijers positions Renard as the only Garamond with a clearly traceable Flemish lineage, descended directly from van den Keere's punchcut shown in Plantin's folio specimen of c.1585.
Classification
Based on Hendrik van den Keere's Gros Canon roman of c.1570, Renard belongs to the Old Style tradition often grouped under Garamonds, but with a distinctly Flemish heritage. Its condensed proportions, large x-height and dark colour reflect the display origins of the original punchcut.
