A 38-style editorial serif family by Ramiro Espinoza, drawn from the sixteenth-century Antwerp punchcutter François Guyot and divided into Headline, Text and Press optical subfamilies.
About
Espinoza studied Guyot's work at Antwerp's Plantin Institute for Typography, selecting elements from the Gros Canon and Ascendonica sizes to build a modern interpretation rather than a facsimile. Seventeenth-century details, including heightened stroke contrast and an enlarged terminal on the lowercase a, were folded in to broaden the family's appeal. The three optical subfamilies, Headline, Text and Press, each with matching italics, allow precise calibration across reading sizes. The family received a Certificate of Typographic Excellence from the Type Directors Club in 2018.
Classification
A revival inspired by the sixteenth-century Antwerp punchcutter François Guyot, with additional seventeenth-century details such as increased contrast and enlarged terminals. The humanist heritage of the French and Flemish punch-cutting tradition places it firmly in the old-style serif category.
