serifhumanist serifitalic
Lexicon specimen from The Enschedé Font Foundry

Bram de Does's 1992 serif engineered for maximum legibility at small sizes, offered in two sub-families distinguished by stem length and six weights each, with matching italics.

About

Lexicon is built around two structural variants: No.1 with shortened ascenders and descenders, and No.2 with conventional stem proportions. Both share identical character widths, allowing a change between them without reflowing text. Six upright weights and six italics in each group give precise typographic control for dense setting in dictionaries, Bibles, encyclopedias and timetables – it has been used in Van Dale's Het Groot Woordenboek der Nederlandse Taal.

Classification

A humanist serif designed specifically for small-size legibility on low-resolution output, with two sub-families distinguished by stem length – a hallmark of careful optical engineering rather than a stylistic genre exercise.
