A low-contrast Ionic text face first drawn at the Polygraphmash Type Design Bureau in 1951–53, based on Griffith's Excelsior, and digitalised with extended character set in 2013.
About
Originally designed in three styles by Lev Malanov and Elena Tzaregorodtseva between 1951 and 1953, the family follows the Ionic-Legibility tradition established by Chauncey H. Griffith's Excelsior at Mergenthaler Linotype in 1931. A digital version was produced by ParaGraph in 1991, and Natalia Vasilyeva later revised the data, broadened the character set and added a Bold Italic for the 2013 release. The result is a sturdy, conventional text family suited to body copy in print publications.
Classification
Belongs to the Ionic-Legibility group, a category of low-contrast newsprint and text serifs developed for high-legibility at small sizes. Based directly on Chauncey H. Griffith's Excelsior (1931), a defining Linotype legibility face.
