A faithful digitisation of Frutiger's 1961 IBM Selectric adaptation of Univers, preserving the unit-based spacing that gives the typeface its distinctive uneven mechanical rhythm.
About
When IBM launched the Selectric Typewriter in 1961, Adrian Frutiger was commissioned to rework Univers to suit the machine's unit-based spacing constraints, producing a version with a charmingly irregular cadence quite unlike conventional monospaced type. Laurenz Brunner's UN-11 digitises this rare cut for contemporary print and screen use, across four weights with matching italics and a variable font. The result sits apart from today's polished grotesques, carrying an idiosyncratic tension between mechanical precision and organic unevenness.
Classification
A digitisation of the unit-spaced Univers that Adrian Frutiger adapted for the IBM Selectric Typewriter in 1961. Neo-grotesque in structure, with the uneven rhythm of unit-based spacing rather than true monospacing.
