Bernd Volmer drew Chauncey from the printed impression of Excelsior rather than its metal punches, reintroducing the ink-bleed roundness lost in subsequent photo and digital adaptations. The result is a low-contrast serif that reads comfortably in text weights while the extreme Hairline and Ultra cuts lend themselves to display use. Round corners and reduced contrast give it a friendlier tone than most Legibility Group revivals.
Classification
A low-contrast serif revival rooted in the 1930s Legibility Group tradition, specifically Excelsior (1931). Reduced typographic contrast, rounded corners and ink-bleed-inspired aesthetics place it firmly in the transitional serif category with display ambitions.
