Kris Sowersby's 2023 revival of Clearface, keeping the 1907 ATF original's elliptical terminals and informal warmth while reworking anything that didn't survive the digital transition cleanly.
About
Family takes Morris Fuller Benton's 1907 Clearface as its source, preserving the easy-going curves, elliptical terminals and open single-storey 'g' that give the original its character. Sowersby keeps deliberate idiosyncrasies – the sloped 'e' crossbar, the consistent f and j overhang – while quietly resolving the strokes on A, V and W that never translated well into digital. Six weights with matching italics and a variable font axis make it practical across text and display sizes.
Classification
Oldstyle serif revival of Clearface (ATF, 1907, Morris Fuller Benton and Linn Boyd Benton). Retains Clearface's elliptical terminals, open single-storey 'g', sloped 'e' crossbar and strong thick-thin contrast. Serifs are thin slabs on thick strokes, bracketed on thin strokes – a structural trait inherited from the original. Variable font weight axis 300–900.
