Marc Rouault's re-imagining of Edward Benguiat's ITC Bookman, widening and reinforcing its slab serif construction across six weights with a true italic, variable design space and a monospaced companion.
About
Drawing influence from street signage – bodegas, hole-in-the-wall restaurants and internet cafes – Redward stabilises and emboldens the Bookman style with an outline-informed approach that gives each weight a distinct character. The family spans six weights with matching italics in both roman and mono subfamilies, all united within a fully variable design space optimised for print and screen. Letterforms are defined by contour rather than stroke, lending the typeface the visceral, constructed quality that characterises Rouault's broader body of work.
Classification
Redward is rooted in the ITC Bookman tradition, characterised by wide proportions, tall x-height and slab-like serifs that give it a sturdy, reinforced quality. The pronounced, almost brutalist construction and strong contrast between roman and italic forms place it firmly in the slab serif category with display ambitions.
