Laurenz Brunner's 2025 revival of Aldo Novarese's lost 1966 Nebiolo serif, expanded from its original single weight into a full family with a monospace sibling and variable font.
About
Originally designed by Novarese as an elegant riposte to Times New Roman, Magister was cut short when Nebiolo collapsed financially and its archives were absorbed by Fiat in the 1970s. Brunner's digitisation, informed by research visits to Turin's Archivio Tipografico and Milan design archives, adds extended weights and a monospace variant well beyond the original scope. The result is a classical Italian text serif with genuine historical grounding, now made available to the public for the first time.
Classification
A digitisation and expansion of Aldo Novarese's 1966 Nebiolo serif, conceived as a stylish counterpoint to Times New Roman. The design sits in the transitional serif tradition with classical Italian sensibility, now extended with additional weights, a monospace variant and a variable font.
