Vernacular specimen from ParaType

A 36-style type system by Hans-Jürg Hunziker and Volker Schnebel, uniting Serif, Clarendon and Sans subfamilies through shared straight stems and six weights with italics.

About

The three subfamilies – Serif, Clarendon and Sans – are held together by common straight stems despite differing axes: the Serif uses a traditional diagonal axis while the Clarendon and Sans adopt a vertical one. Six weights from Regular to Black, each with an italic, give the system broad typographic range. Intended for editorial use including poster and magazine work, it also supports small caps, fractions and index figures.

Classification

A type system comprising three distinct subfamilies – Serif, Clarendon and Sans – unified by shared stem geometry. The Clarendon subfamily bridges the bracketed slab and the humanist serif, while the Sans aligns vertically with the Clarendon, contrasting with the Serif's diagonal axis.
