A Bitstream adaptation of Centaur, itself Bruce Rogers's revival of Nicolas Jenson's 1470 Venetian types, extended to Cyrillic with small caps by Dmitry Kirsanov for ParaType in 2003.
About
The Latin is rooted in Bruce Rogers's Centaur, which drew from Jenson's Renaissance roman, with an italic based on Ludovico degli Arrighi's chancery hand as interpreted by Frederic Warde. The design was first adapted for mechanical composition by Monotype in 1929, and this version adds a Cyrillic extension including small caps. Six styles cover Regular, Demi and Bold weights with matching italics, making it suitable for both book text and display setting.
Classification
Derives from Centaur, itself a revival of Nicolas Jenson's 1470 Venetian typefaces, placing it firmly in the humanist/Venetian serif tradition. Letterforms retain strong pen-drawn characteristics of Italian humanist minuscule.
