A calligraphically informed Venetian serif by Matthieu Cortat, released in 2008, offered across three optical sizes – Caption, Text and Titling – each in three weights with italics.
About
Stuart takes its proportions and forms from 15th-century Venetian type, tempered by a calligraphic sensibility that lends it classical sobriety without historicism. Its italic follows the precedent of the earliest Aldine italics by Francesco Griffo: only slightly slanted, with a subtly varying axis of inclination. Three optical sizes govern use across the full range of body sizes, with Titling suited to 14pt and above, Text to 9–14pt and Caption to 9pt and under.
Classification
Rooted in 15th-century Venetian models with calligraphic influence, its italic drawn from the barely-slanted early italics of Aldus Manutius and Francesco Griffo places it firmly in the humanist/Venetian tradition.
